What Is WebP? Image Format Explained

WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that provides both lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency, and animation support in a single format. WebP files are typically 25-35% smaller than equivalent JPEG or PNG files at comparable visual quality.

How WebP works

WebP lossy compression is based on VP8 video codec technology, which uses predictive coding to estimate pixel blocks and encode only the differences. WebP lossless compression uses techniques including transform coding, entropy coding, and a custom dictionary to achieve smaller files than PNG.

Browser support

WebP is supported by all major browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari (since version 14), Edge, and Opera. This makes it a practical choice for web images. However, some older software and native applications may not support WebP, which is why JPEG and PNG remain important fallback formats.
